Mayers 1979a

Reference

Mayers, Marvin K. 1979a.The basic values: A model of cognitive styles for analyzing human behavior. Unpublished manuscript. Interest level: lay specialist.

Summary

Basic values model includes the following patterns of behavior:

  • Time versus event
  • Dichotomism versus holism
  • Crisis versus noncrisis
  • Vulnerability-as-strength versus vulnerability-as-weakness
  • Thing or object as goal versus person as goal
  • Prestige-as-achieved versus prestige-as-ascribed

Discusses these behaviors in the context of specific cultures and gives practical applications based on personal research. Also gives sample cultural problems to work through using the values model.

Evaluation

Presentation was very clear and complete. Applied model to many different areas (teaching, management, marital relationships, cross-cultural, and linguistic analysis).

Values model of cognitive styles is very insightful and valuable for cross-cultural work.

Application to literacy lies in understanding different learning styles. Cross-culturally and among different individuals, the basic values will be different.
