Summary

Is one of a series about people who hope to learn literacy in English. Examines complex issues and contexts that shape the teacher's work and its efficacy in the second language literacy classroom. Issues include

  • national policy
  • economics
  • family, and
  • the classroom itself.

Leads teachers to think about ways of teaching, and negotiating between program policies and the possibilities for meeting students' agendas for their daily lives.

Questions how much teachers know about policies (that determine students' future) and program funding (the extent to which it influences the content and material taught). Also questions students' home situations and their reasons for coming to class. Suggests a collective effort to learn the answers.
