Newmeyer, Fredrick J. 1986.The politics of linguistics. Chicago: University of Chicago Press. 171pages. 0226577201. Location: Dallas SIL Library 410.9 N556p. Interest level: specialist.

Summary

Reviews the development of the various fields of linguistics from a political perspective. Focuses on the relationship between autonomous (structuralist and generative) linguistics as opposed to humanistic and sociolinguistic approaches.

Concludes the goals of the three orientations are wholly complementary. Argues that autonomous linguistics, far from being inconsistent with progressive political goals, can be creatively applied to the fulfillment of such goals.

Evaluation

Writes in an interesting, easy-to-read style. Focuses more on the history and relationship between the various orientations to linguistics than the actual effect that linguistics has or can have on politics.
