Summary

Nigeria is a country with a high rate of preliteracy. Is not a country where one can talk about a reading tradition. Adult preliteracy rate is about 34 percent, secondary school attendance is 16 percent, and tertiary school attendance is 3 percent. Over 80 percent of the children in the relevant age group attend primary school. Evidence shows that most of these children are still relatively preliterate by the time they leave primary school.
