Olaofe, Isaac A. 1990. "The management of mixed reading ability at the primary school." READ: Promoting Literacy and Literature. Interest level: specialist.

Summary

Hope for future literacy growth in Nigeria lies in the primary school. Dwindling economy can no longer effectively sustain the various adult literacy programs of the "oil boom" era. Unfortunately, the primary education which is now the focal point of mass literacy development is beset with many problems. These crises are deeply rooted in the art of

  • managing the primary education
  • employing the education
  • equipping it
  • organizing it, and
  • believing in it.

Concern here is with one of these crisis situations. Is based on assumption that unless literacy is firmly developed at the primary school, Nigeria will continue to experience "unemployment of educated youth in a country that does not have enough agriculturists, medical doctors, and middle manpower."
