Ortiz Rescaniere 1981

Reference

Ortiz Rescaniere, Alejandro. 1981. "Some anthropological considerations concerning bilingual education." In Larson, M. and Davis 1981. (Much of chapter appeared in Spanish in Ortiz Rescaniere 1970.) Interest level: specialist.

Summary

Reviews the following common arguments against the teaching of aboriginal languages:

  • Teaching them could be a threat to national unity.
  • Teaching them could be an obstacle to learning Spanish.
  • Mother tongue languages are traditional that cannot express modern concepts and do not have a grammar or literature.

Refutes each argument. Concludes that only through radical educational reform and recognition of and respect for each culture, can dialogue be established and all Peruvians thereby enriched.

Evaluation

Is good reading for bilingual education personnel and literacy specialists.
