| Summary | |
|
Expatriates began trying to write the Shilluk language around 1917. Tried various alternatives, with an ever increasing number of vowels represented in the orthography. Ten vowels plus length (total of 20) has been the accepted number to date. Tone has never been written. In spite of all of these efforts, Shilluk has remained virtually unreadable for the majority of mother tongue speakers. Even when Shilluks wrote letters or texts, after a few minutes they were unable to read what they had written with any degree of confidence. | |
