Summary

States the use of colonial languages in developing countries as a "neutral" mediation substituting for many mother tongue languages creates a chasm between the elite and the masses. Results in stunted cognitive growth and lack of creativity and innovativeness in children, and results in the atrophy of mother tongue cultures. Colonial languages generate an inappropriate technology and create an educated elite "committed to pursuing the lifestyle of the developed world." Argues against negative approaches to multilingualism. Considers the mother tongue the expression of the primary identity of a human being, and protests against neglect of mother tongue education.
