Philips, S. 1970

Reference

Philips, Susan U. 1970. "Acquisition of rules for appropriate speech." In Alatis 1970. Interest level: general.

Summary

Discusses different rules for appropriate speech usage in Indian and non-Indian cultures. Describes the consequences these differences have regarding the development of communicative competence for Indian children. Gives particular attention to structured speech events in a classroom, such as question-answer sessions. Indian children learn by

  • observation-listening
  • supervised participation, and
  • private, self-initiated self-testing.
Evaluation

Shows importance for teachers to know which learning style their students have, especially in a cross-cultural situation. Fear of speaking in front of a group is a general human problem, but it can be stronger in some cultures than in others (Warm Springs Indian Reservation in central Oregon).
