Pike, P. 1984

Reference

Pike, Patricia L. 1984. "Cross-cultural research applied to teaching reading in pre-literate societies." Notes on Literacy.

Summary

Reviews cross-cultural use of Piagetian tasks and indicates two things. Tasks are not reliable, culture-free measures of cognitive development. Optimal performance on cognitive tasks requires that task and materials must be familiar and meaningful. Thus, although cognition is not underdeveloped, performance may be poor. Makes several suggestions to increase familiarity and meaningfulness of the reading task to increase cognitive performance in preliterate societies.
