Sheffler, E. Margaret. 1968. "Literacy and social problems." Notes on Literacy.
| Summary | |
Setup shows vital importance of teaching adults to read and of allowing them to become fluent readers before holding children's classes. Otherwise children (who retain syllable recognition more readily than adults) will tease and torment adults whenever they see them struggling to learn to read.
Result can be that adults will decide they are too old to read and will grow too discouraged to continue attending classes.
