Summary

Briefly describes the history of the teacher training aspect of the Peruvian jungle bilingual school program. Also describes how it set the pace for development of the program as a whole.

Over the years, teachers trained in these courses taught thousands of pupils in 28 language groups. In 1978, 12,000 students enrolled and served their communities in many ways, in addition to classroom activities. Since its inception, the teacher-training course has been endorsed and promoted by each succeeding government as part of the bilingual education program.
