Thompson 1982

Reference

Thompson, Roger M. 1982. "Language planning in frontier America: The case of the Deseret alphabet." Language Problems and Language Planning. Interest level: general.

Summary

Describes an orthography experiment that occurred in the 1800s among the Mormons. Twice-attempted orthography failed due to a change in attitudes among the people and lack of preparation for implementation. Describes how the felt needs of a community may differ for the following generation.

Evaluation

Is a well-done and interesting article. Clearly demonstrates some motivations for language reform and why a reform fails. Is enlightening and useful for considering sociological implications in a target area, as well as logistical matters.
