Summary

Gives brief, fascinating account of how high interest or motivation in writing among Amuesha children and their teachers was stimulated by a contest in writing the names of birds. Used names to prepare an illustrated Dictionary of Birds. (Identified a total of 500 birds.) Other contests followed, and one student identified 661 trees and plants. Both students and teachers prepared illustrated reading materials from their experiences.
