Current instructional programs

The content of instructional programs varies greatly.

The content of a particular program depends on

• the reading approach or approaches on which it is based, and
• the needs of the community in which it will be used.

Current instructional programs tend to favor reading approaches that focus on both meaning and phonics. The programs described in the following modules are just a few examples of those used today.

Each of the programs uses a unique combination of approaches. They have all been used successfully to teach people to read and write.
