Designing a test for literacy materials

Introduction

Often, you will need to design tests for specific kinds of literacy materials, or to meet specific testing needs.

Overview

In these modules, "administering literacy materials tests" refers to

  • having people look at or use specific literacy materials and give feedback about them, and
  • recording the results of this process.

"Taking literacy materials tests" refers to

  • looking at or using materials, and
  • giving feedback about them to the person who is administering the test.

The term "testing literacy materials" has not been used in this context because it confuses the issue of who is asking for feedback and who is providing the feedback.

Things to do
Here are the things to do when you design a test for literacy materials:

  • Determine the goals and objectives for the particular test you are designing.
  • Determine what kind of testing procedure would best achieve these goals and objectives.
    See:

    Methods of evaluation and testing

  • Prepare the test, explaining all procedures and including all forms that will be necessary to administer it.
