How to determine the number of pages in a center-bound book

Introduction

This module will help you understand how to determine the number of pages you will need for a center-bound book. Because the number of pages in a finished book must be divisible by 4, you may have to add some blank pages.

Steps Example
Follow these steps to determine the number of pages in a center-bound book:

  1. Add together all text and illustration pages and all front and back matter pages. This gives you the number of pages you will need for the book you are making.
    Tip:

Do not consider the book cover unless it will be printed on the same paper as the book pages.

  2. If the number is not divisible by four, add enough blank pages to make the number divisible by four.
    Tip:

Add the blank pages at the front of the book, at the back of the book, or before the first chapter in the book.

  3. Determine how many pieces of paper the book will be printed on by dividing the number of pages by 4.
