Making the screen frame of a silk-screen printer

Introduction

The screen frame is the top piece of a silk-screen printer. It is a rectangular frame slightly larger than the paper to be printed. It has a fine cloth (fabric screen) stretched tightly over it. It is usually connected to the base with a hinge.

See: How to make a silk-screen printer for all the steps in making a silk-screen printer.

Steps
Follow these steps to make the screen frame of a silk-screen printer:

  1. Make a groove 6mm wide and 6mm deep on each of the screen frame pieces.
  2. Cut away 38mm x 13mm from each end of the screen frame side pieces.
  3. Cut off the corners of the screen frame end pieces as shown.
    • The frame ends will now fit into the frame sides and allow the groove to continue around the corners.

  4. Nail and glue the screen frame sides to the screen frame ends.
    • Use two 50mm nails to fasten each joint.
    • Pre-drill for the nails to avoid splitting the wood.
