Planning a training program

Every literacy program must include a training component. When such projects take place in a developing country context, the need for training is usually even greater. Potential literacy personnel may come with little or no experience and technical background.

Here is a prerequisite for planning a training program:

• You need to have a well-developed plan for your literacy program.

• You need to determine what kinds of literacy personnel need to be trained.

Goals and objectives

• Write a clear, realistic goal for the training program.
• Write measurable objectives which represent an achievement of the goal.

Strategies

• Determine how to deliver the training.
• Plan the training curriculum.

Activities

• Plan specific training activities such as training courses and workshops.
• Make a training program schedule.

Resources

• Determine how many people need to be trained.

  Tip:	You need to train about 30 percent more people in any training category than you expect to need in your program because of attrition.

• Determine who the trainees will be.
• Determine who the trainers will be.
• Determine funding needs and sources.

Evaluation and documentation

• Plan evaluations into the program.
• Document the program.
