Abstract

Content of the legislation establishing revised official orthographies for the Mayan languages of Guatemala.

Evaluation

Document was produced in the midst of a heated debate about the official orthographies for Mayan languages. Orthographies which previously had been approved by the Instituto Indigenista Nacional were practical orthographies that blended principles of phonemic representation with the spelling conventions of Spanish. A group of US linguists and Mayan activists promoted an alternative orthography that differed in only a few symbols. This orthography ignored Spanish spelling conventions in favor of an adaptation of the phonetic alphabet to symbols that could be produced on a standard Spanish typewriter. Represents the victory of the Mayan activist orthography over the previous one.
