Batchelor, Peter. 1981.People in rural development. Exeter, England: Paternoster. xii, 157 pages. 0853643105. Paperback £ Interest level: specialist.

Summary

Chapters 1, 4, 5 discuss how development and training is best accomplished in rural developing nation areas. Emphasizes the importance of recognizing their values: relationships, sharing and caring, and their immediate needs. Points out the effectiveness of practical on-the-job training above classroom teaching and suggests apprenticeships.

Discusses informal teaching methods, group work and use of visual aids such as

  • flash cards
  • flip charts
  • models, and
  • puppets.

Acting and singing are also effective.

Focuses primarily on agricultural development such as farming, but concepts apply to any contact with cultures of developing countries. The value for literacy lies in applying these same principles (such as group work, observation, informal teaching methods) to the teaching of reading.

Evaluation

Evaluator desires book geared specifically for literacy workers. Concepts presented are very helpful, but practical application is missing for literacy.
