Summary

During the past two decades, significant progress has been made in defining a theory of second language acquisition. Brown claims that continued success depends on being "cautiously eclectic," as no single theory or model will solve the mystery of second language acquisition. Advocates a broadly-based theory to choose a particular method. Provides a comprehensive grasp and understanding of the theoretical foundations of foreign language teaching and for the use of methods and techniques.

Text is for graduates or advanced undergraduates interested in language teaching, and for teachers wanting an overview of current theoretical issues. It does not require prior knowledge of linguistics or psychology, and can benefit teachers of any foreign language. Users are advised to maintain regular contact with a small group of second language learners.
