Callister, Sandra. 1985. "Report on testing in Misima vernacular pre-schools in 1984." READ: Promoting Literacy and Literature. Interest level: lay specialist.

Summary

Misima is an island in Milne Bay Province, about 150 miles east of the eastern tip of the Papua New Guinea mainland. Approximately 11,000 people speak Misima. After a trial year in 1983, 30 teachers representing seven villages attended a training course and started a mother tongue preschool program in 1984. Yearly program consisted of

  • a prereading and prewriting course for 12 weeks
  • formal teaching of reading and writing for 21 weeks, and
  • fluency training for four or five weeks.

Included the reading of small books prepared for the classes, some creative writing, and elementary math work. Describes methods and results of testing. Discusses influence on learning of the age and sex of students and the distance of the student's village from community schools. In Misima, it appears that a child turning eight by midyear will best be able to use the learning opportunities.
