Campbell, Jody. 1986. "Letters, language learning, and literacy: A West Sepik experience." READ: Promoting Literacy and Literature. Interest level: specialist.

Summary

During language learning, the Campbells observed that some language helpers who were literate in Pidgin could read some Yare words from their phonetically transcribed notes. They challenged the young men to write a few words on their own and found they did amazingly well. They encouraged Yare speakers

  • to write letters in their mother tongue
  • to write to communicate, and
  • to spell the words as well as they could.

The excitement of sending and receiving letters provided motivation for the language helpers and gave useful insights for the Campbells.
