Cates and Cates 1975

Reference

Cates, Larry E., and Ann F. Cates. 1975. "Authors for Papua New Guinea." In McElhanon 1975. Interest level: lay specialist.

Evaluation

Held "Skul Bilong Raitim Ol Stori" at SIL, Papua New Guinea in 1973 with 13 participants; each person was sponsored by an SIL worker or a missionary. Sponsors were interested in producing more literature for new literates in their area. Cates and Johnston, as directors of the course, worked to provide an atmosphere of

  • freedom
  • appreciation
  • noncriticism, and
  • encouragement.

On the first day of the workshop, the men were told they were going to produce 50 copies of a 10--12 page booklet for their own people to read. "We felt that these two factors, an appreciative, non-critical atmosphere, and the prospect of a finished product at the end of the course were largely the reason for the phenomenal output and cheerful enthusiasm of the men."

The main problem was lack of typists. Need one typist for every five writers. Two-thirds of the total manuscripts were produced in the mother tongue, and the remainder were produced in Pidgin.
