Reference

Chomsky, Carol. 1991. "Stages in language development and reading exposure." In Minami and Kennedy 1991. (Reprint from HER.) Interest level: academic.

Summary

Shows the natural process of children's language development continues actively into elementary school years. Illustrates that in spite of diverse individual differences in the rate of development, children proceed along similar developmental paths to construct implicit grammatical rules.

Discusses the importance of exposing a child to a rich variety of language inputs in interesting, stimulating situations. Stresses curriculum emphasis on wide reading, as it facilitates increased knowledge of the language.
