Summary

In March 1984, a mother tongue preschool program was started at Itokama in the Barai language area of Oro Province (Papua New Guinea). Following the Community School calendar, the preschool has four terms in the year. The first two terms consist of prereading activities and the second two are spent teaching the children to read and write in the mother tongue language.

Future plans are to continue weekly class in the community school so the children can maintain and improve their mother tongue reading skills. However, children who do not go to school will attend a children's reading club that will be held several times a week in their village.
