Reference

Feitelson, Dina. 1980. "Relating instructional strategies to language idiosyncracies in Hebrew." In Kavanagh and Venezky 1980. Interest level: specialist.

Summary

As influx of immigrants with little or no education entered Israel in the 1950s, reading instruction shifted from "look-say" approach to teaching sequenced decoding skills. Former strategy failed among this new segment of population. Introduced new strategy utilizing observations of the relevant classrooms and applied linguistics.

Briefly discusses how idiosyncrasies of the Hebrew writing system were studied and broken into skill areas dealing with

  • word shapes
  • word sounds and symbols, and
  • vowel use.

Difficulties these areas offered were systematically sequenced in the curriculum, using newly developed instructional techniques. Successfully enabled students to overcome difficulties and greatly improved the overall reading program in the nation of Israel.
