Thomas, Keith. 1986. "The meaning of literacy in early modern England." In Baumann, G. 1986. Interest level: general.

Summary

Surmises that literacy and lack of literacy long functioned side by side, with no apparent disadvantage. Many more than recorded probably could read. Market economy set up discrepancy; more a socioeconomic schism than an "ability to think" schism. Gives interesting description of functioning without literacy in a "literate" society. Has implications for African countries where many "get by" without literacy so far.
