What is a chain?

According to Robert Gagné (1985), a chain is a set of associations which occur together in some logical arrangement or sequence.

Examples
 

Here are some examples of chains:

 
  • Tying one's shoes
  • The events of a particular battle
  • The group of states into which a country may be divided
