Information structure research presented at recent workshop (December 2012) Linguists with a special interest in the study of information structure recently met in the Netherlands for a workshop at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics. The theme of the second annual workshop organized by the Syntax, Typology and Information Structure Group was “Categories of Information Structure across Languages.” An SIL linguist was among those who presented research at the workshop. 44th Algonquian Conference: A language family of Canada and the US (November 2012) The 44th Algonquian Conference was held at the University of Chicago’s Gleacher Center, in downtown Chicago, 25-28 October. The annual conference is an international meeting which provides an opportunity for researchers to present papers on Algonquian peoples. Colleagues share expertise in Papua New Guinea dictionary workshop (November 2012) Recently, members of nine language communities in the Aitape area of Papua New Guinea’s Sandaun Province (West Sepik) attended a two-week dictionary-making workshop. These languages have never before been documented in the form of a dictionary. The workshop was led by local people involved with language development in the region who had previously attended an SIL lexicography workshop. A Grammar of Balantak: A Language of Eastern Sulawesi (October 2012) In cooperation with members of the local community, two SIL linguists have completed a new work entitled A Grammar of Balantak: A Language of Eastern Sulawesi. This is the first comprehensive description of the grammar of Balantak, one of Indonesia’s 719 living languages, which is spoken by thirty thousand people on the island of Sulawesi.
