Diploma course prepares students for linguistic research and language development (September 2012) A diverse group of thirty-seven students from Mexico recently completed a diploma course in applied linguistics at Mexico’s Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí (Autonomous University of San Luis Potosí). Linguistics training at the University of North Dakota: Engaging with signed and spoken languages (August 2012) Students and faculty recently completed the sixty-first summer of SIL linguistics courses at the University of North Dakota. While the annual summer session is only nine weeks long, that time is packed with learning opportunities. Students engage with a variety of topics in linguistics and gain practical skill in the art of learning a new language. As with other SIL training programs in locations around the world, SIL-UND courses are intensely practical and geared to students who are preparing for involvement in language development. WOCAL 7: African languages for development, education and cultural heritage (August 2012) The 7th World Congress of African Linguistics (WOCAL 7) was held at the University of Buea in Cameroon 20-24 August.The theme of this year’s event was “Language description and documentation for development, education and the preservation of cultural heritage in Africa.” WOCAL, which takes place every three years, began in 1994 as an international gathering focused on a broad range of topics in African linguistics with a strong emphasis on the participation of African scholars. Culture and communication in the Kewa language of Papua New Guinea (July 2012) A study co-authored by SIL International Anthropology Consultant Dr. Karl Franklin and his daughter, Dr. Karol Hardin of Baylor University, was published in the latest issue of the journal Oceanic Linguistics (Vol. 51, June 2012). “Complaints in Kewa Letters” provides insight into the language and culture of the Kewa community of Papua New Guinea (PNG).
