Matsigenka-Spanish dictionary published in Peru (April 2012) SIL is pleased to announce the recent publication of a new work which provides insight into the language and culture of the Matsigenka community of Peru. Diccionario Matsigenka-Castellano (the Matsigenka-Spanish dictionary), is a result of collaboration between Irene Chávez and other community members with outside linguists, including SIL’s Betty Snell. Pioneering study on endangered language families co-authored by SIL researcher (April 2012) Groundbreaking research on the vitality of language families is the subject of an article recently published in Language by Dr. Douglas Whalen, Vice President of Research for Haskins Laboratories and Distinguished Professor at The City University of New York, and Dr. Gary Simons, Chief Research Officer for SIL International. With every language that ceases to be spoken, the richness of the world’s linguistic diversity decreases, cultural heritage is weakened and important knowledge is lost forever. Net.Lang: Pursuing a linguistically equitable Internet (March 2012) The Maaya World Network for Linguistic Diversity has released a new collection of articles on the topic of multilingualism and the Internet. Net.Lang: Towards the Multilingual Cyberspace aims to raise awareness and explores strategies for improving Internet accessibility for speakers of all languages. Training institute begins second session of linguistics courses in Colombia (January 2012) On 5 January, students and instructors returned for the second session of courses in an SIL-sponsored linguistics training program known as CLAVE, Curso de Lingüística Aplicada para Vernáculo-hablantes,* held this year in Colombia. CLAVE (the acronym means ‘key’ in Spanish) encourages students to recognize the value and uniqueness of their mother tongue. Graduates return to their communities with the skills needed to support local literacy and translation efforts.
