Ethiopian Ministry of Education and SIL Ethiopia sign cooperative agreement (September 2011) A new Memorandum of Understanding was signed on 23 August by State Minister of Education Fuad Ibrahim Omer, on behalf of the Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, and Dr. Alemayehu Hailu, Director of SIL Ethiopia. This agreement formalizes the commitment to continued partnership between the Government of Ethiopia and SIL Ethiopia. Eunice Pike and Eugene Nida Remembered (September 2011) SIL celebrates the legacy of Eunice Pike and Eugene Nida, both of whom recently passed away. Both Pike and Nida participated in the third session of SIL courses in 1936 and went on to make major contributions to language development, linguistics and translation scholarship. 26th Graduation Ceremony of Africa International University (August 2011) On 9 July 2011, Africa International University (AIU) in Nairobi, Kenya, held its 26th graduation ceremony. Degrees were awarded to 84 graduates, including AIU’s first group of PhD students, three of whom serve with SIL partners. SIL releases The Kifuliiru Language, Volumes 1 and 2 (August 2011) SIL International announces the publication of a two-volume set providing a comprehensive description of Kifuliiru. This ground-breaking work thoroughly documents the structures and processes of this Bantu (Zone J) language. Kifuliiru is spoken by the approximately 400,000 members of the Bafuliiru community, whose homeland is in the Uvira Territory on the eastern border of the Democratic Republic of Congo. SIL celebrates 60 years at the University of North Dakota (August 2011) SIL at the University of North Dakota is celebrating its 60th year of linguistics courses, a relationship which began with UND’s invitation. This independent program is affiliated with the University of North Dakota’s College of Arts and Sciences and Graduate School. There were 117 students enrolled in this year’s session.
