As SIL staff serve around the world, they partner with communities in language development efforts—such as literacy and multilingual education—and conduct linguistic and cultural research. FieldWorks training promotes language documentation by mother tongue speakers in Malaysia (November 2011) A workshop offering training in FieldWorks language documentation software was held 17-21 October 2011 at the University of Malaysia, Sabah (UMS). The workshop was co-sponsored by the Centre for the Promotion of Knowledge & Language Learning (PPIB) at UMS, the Kadazandusun Chair of UMS, the UMS Association of Mixed-Methods Researchers (UMAR) and SIL Malaysia. A total of 60 participants from Malaysia and abroad took part in the workshop. Most of the participants were from the ethnolinguistic minority communities of Sabah and Sarawak. Endangered Languages Week at the University of Texas at Arlington (November 2011) The Department of Linguistics and TESOL* at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) has arranged a series of events to raise awareness of languages in peril. UTA Endangered Languages Week events will take place on the UTA campus 31 October through 4 November. The event is free and open to the public. Ethiopian Ministry of Education and SIL Ethiopia sign cooperative agreement (September 2011) A new Memorandum of Understanding was signed on 23 August by State Minister of Education Fuad Ibrahim Omer, on behalf of the Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, and Dr. Alemayehu Hailu, Director of SIL Ethiopia. This agreement formalizes the commitment to continued partnership between the Government of Ethiopia and SIL Ethiopia.
