Curriculum and Instruction in Formal and Non-Formal Education

Strong and successful mother tongue-based multilingual education (MTB MLE) programs in non-dominant language communities recognize that students’ language and culture are not problems to be overcome but excellent resources for successful learning in school.

Curriculum for each year of MTB MLE is based directly on standards established by education authorities and adapted to affirm and build on the knowledge and experience that students bring to the classroom. Well-planned curriculum and instruction for MTB MLE ensures that students will achieve their educational goals without being forced to sacrifice their heritage language and culture.

SIL provides technical advice and resources to language communities, government agencies and non-government organizations in developing curriculum and instructional materials for their MTB MLE programs.
