Office of Bilingual Education-US Government

The Office of Bilingual Education and Minority Languages  Affairs (OBEMLA) of the U.S. Department of Education held an  institute for Title VII grantees February 20-21, 2001 in  Phoenix, AZ prior to the National Association for Bilingual  Education (NABE) conference. UN Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD)
UNRISD has a programme called ‘Identities, Conflict and Cohesion’. Under this programme they have conducted a research project entitled “Identity, Power and the Rights of Indigenous Peoples”. See below for a description of the project. Research was conducted in Bolivia, Peru, Chad-Cameroon, Nigeria, the Philippines, India, Australia and Canada. A series of seminars is being convened to disseminate the results from this project and to secure feedback from academics, NGOs and indigenous peoples about the project’s research findings and policy recommendations before the publication of programme papers, articles, policy briefs and an edited volume. The first of these seminars was convened on 18 August 2007 in Cochabamba, Bolivia. In 2008 further seminars will be held in Peru (10 March in Lima and 12 March in Cusco), Nigeria (Abuja on 10 April)  and New Zealand (Auckland on 23 April).
