New book explores language and culture in education around the globe (June 2013) A new collection of studies addresses the challenges faced by students and teachers whose mother tongue is other than that used in their country’s schools. Pame-speaking authors publish original literature (May 2013) The first book of original literature in the Pame language was recently published in Mexico: Nakuɛnkʹ nɛp namitk ntɛuʹ giriuyat xiʹiὺyat kjuɛnt ruʹ ganuʹbat (I’m Going to Tell You About What Happened to Me Yesterday: Four Pames Share About Their Days). The 447-page book is a collection of journal entries chronicling daily life from the different perspectives of several members of the community. MLE pilot project planned for Solomon Islands (May 2013) Thanks to a new multilingual education pilot program, the next group of prep class (kindergarten) students in two language communities of the Solomon Islands will learn to read and write in their own languages when they begin school next year. The pilot program being developed is sponsored by the Solomon Islands Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development (MEHRD) with funding from UNICEF. DepEd and SIL Philippines host joint press conference (May 2013) On 30 April the Philippines’ Department of Education (DepEd) and SIL Philippines hosted a joint press conference at the DepEd Central Office in Manila. In cooperation with DepEd and other partners, SIL has been involved with linguistic research and language development efforts in the Philippines since 1953. Contest photos highlight the value of literacy (April 2013) The Global Partnership for Education (GPE) recently held a photo and video competition to raise awareness of the life-changing impact of literacy. SIL was among the many organizations that joined in supporting the effort as co-sponsors of the “Reading Changed My Life” contest. GPE has just announced the release of an e-album which showcases the winning entries and a number of other excellent photos submitted for the contest.
