Learning Metrics Task Force will focus on quality in global education (November 2012) As the 2015 deadline approaches for achieving the Education for All goals, UNESCO and the Brookings Institute’s Center for Universal Education are joining together in a new effort to measure quality in education. While much attention has focused on improving access to school programs for all children and youth, access is only a first step. In order to ensure that education opportunities are truly effective, methods for measuring outcomes are also needed. NGOs look to the future of education initiatives (November 2012) The sixth meeting of the Collective Consultation of NGOs on Education for All (CCNGO/EFA) recently concluded. The meeting was hosted by UNESCO 24 to 26 October at its Paris headquarteres. Representatives of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) from around the world gathered to reflect on the achievements, challenges and the future of Education for All (EFA), an initiative adopted in 2000 and scheduled to conclude in 2015. Global literacy progress in focus at UNESCO round table (October 2012) “Reaching the 2015 Literacy Target: Delivering on the Promise” was the theme for two days of discussion at the High Level International Round Table for Literacy recently hosted by UNESCO at its headquarters in Paris. Attendees included representatives from more than forty countries: education ministers, representatives of civil society, private partners, various UN agencies and NGOs, including several SIL staff. Education leaders collaborate on early grade reading in Asia (October 2012) The Global Partnership for Education (GPE) invited representatives of government education ministries, civil society organizations, non-governmental organizations, and donor partners from across Asia to the second in a series of All Children Reading workshops. The event took place 17-20 September in Bangkok, Thailand. Celebrating language development in the world’s Deaf communities (September 2012) The World Federation of the Deaf has designated 23-29 September as International Week of the Deaf, preceding the International Day of the Deaf on 30 September. SIL’s involvement with Deaf populations is part of its long-standing advocacy for ethnolinguistic communities throughout the world.
