Celebrating language development in the world’s Deaf communities (September 2012) The World Federation of the Deaf has designated 23-29 September as International Week of the Deaf, preceding the International Day of the Deaf on 30 September. SIL’s involvement with Deaf populations is part of its long-standing advocacy for ethnolinguistic communities throughout the world. International Literacy Day 2012: Cultivating Peace (September 2012) With this year’s theme for International Literacy Day, UNESCO encourages people around the world to consider the link between social stability and access to education. The 2012 theme, “Cultivating Peace,” highlights the role of education opportunities in creating healthy communities and nations. Literacy is a key component of Education for All (EFA), a UNESCO initiative. SIL contributes to the EFA literacy goals through language development efforts such as multilingual education and mother tongue literacy for children and adults. New facility improves women’s access to training opportunities in Papua New Guinea (August 2012) On Saturday 11 August, representatives from government and partnering organizations joined SIL leadership to celebrate the opening of a new women’s dormitory at SIL’s regional Training Centre in Ukarumpa, in the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea (PNG). The dormitory provides accommodations for up to twenty women. Another twenty-bed addition is planned. In attendance at the opening was the newly elected Member of Parliament for Obura-Wonenara district, Mr. Mehrra Minne Kipeta, who voiced his support for training and his appreciation of the new facility. Improving opportunities for student success: Mother-tongue education in Cameroon (August 2012) The Global Partnership for Education (GPE) recently convened a meeting of its Community of Practice for Early Grade Reading. SIL is one of the development partners participating in this effort to improve education for children in developing countries. Among those who shared research and led discussion at the meeting was Dr. Steve Walter, one of SIL’s senior literacy and education consultants and Associate Professor of Language Development at the Graduate Institute of Applied Linguistics.
