Educators explore multilingual education theory and practice in Bangkok workshop (April 2012) Using students’ home-languages in early education was the focus of a recent workshop for which eighty educators working in twenty countries came together in Bangkok, Thailand. The 2012 Workshop on Bridging Between Languages in Mother Tongue-Based Bilingual/Multilingual Education (MTB MLE) was hosted on the campus of Mahidol University 19-30 March. Co-sponsored and conducted by Mahidol’s Research Institute for Languages and Cultures of Asia (RILCA) and also SIL, this workshop was the fifth in a series on planning for strong and sustainable MTB MLE programs. Representatives from twenty-six countries gather in Rwanda to collaborate on early grade literacy (March 2012) All Children Reading: Africa 2012 was hosted this month in Kigali, Rwanda, by the Global Partnership for Education (GPE). Two four-day workshops provided opportunity for literacy experts and education policy makers from twenty-five African countries and Haiti to collaborate on important technical and programmatic issues and draft action plans for improvements to early grade literacy in their home countries. ADEA 2012 Triennale: Education and training for sustainable development (March 2012) Representatives of African governments and leaders in the fields of education and development gathered in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso 13-17 February for the 2012 Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA) Triennial Conference. The theme for the event was “Promoting critical knowledge, skills and qualifications for sustainable development in Africa: How to design and implement an effective response by education and training systems.” The conference opened with an address from H.E. Fifty years of language development in Africa (March 2012) This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of SIL’s service in language development in Africa. Since the first cooperative agreement with the University of Ghana, SIL has been invited to partner with government agencies, educational institutions and local communities across the continent. SIL is a faith-based nonprofit organization committed to serving language communities worldwide as they build capacity for sustainable language development, primarily through research, translation, training and materials development. Second Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education Conference in the Philippines (February 2012) Local and international scholars, policy makers and educators gathered in Iloilo City16-18 February for the Second Philippine Conference-Workshop on Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE). The theme for the event was “Education for All and Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education, 2015 and Beyond.” SIL was among the sponsoring organizations that cooperated to organize the event and SIL multilingual education and literacy personnel led several sessions.
