Training institute begins second session of linguistics courses in Colombia (January 2012) On 5 January, students and instructors returned for the second session of courses in an SIL-sponsored linguistics training program known as CLAVE, Curso de Lingüística Aplicada para Vernáculo-hablantes,* held this year in Colombia. CLAVE (the acronym means ‘key’ in Spanish) encourages students to recognize the value and uniqueness of their mother tongue. Graduates return to their communities with the skills needed to support local literacy and translation efforts. Endangered Languages Week at the University of Texas at Arlington (November 2011) The Department of Linguistics and TESOL* at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) has arranged a series of events to raise awareness of languages in peril. UTA Endangered Languages Week events will take place on the UTA campus 31 October through 4 November. The event is free and open to the public. HIV/AIDS research by SIL anthropologist featured in Global Journal of Health Science (October 2011) As rates of HIV/AIDS infection reach alarming levels in some areas, governments and humanitarian organizations around the world have devoted vast amounts of energy, resources and personnel to prevention and treatment.
