Preliminary Research

Successful and sustained mother tongue-based multilingual education (MTB MLE) programs are based on an accurate understanding of the social, cultural, political and economic context in which the students live, make strategic use of resources and are ready to deal appropriately with challenges as they arise. Preliminary research provides program leaders with the information they need to plan and implement their programs effectively. It also provides information about students’ language and education background that is useful for assessing the students’ progress as they move through each year of the program.

SIL education specialists provide training and technical support for MTB MLE program leaders in planning preliminary research and also in analyzing and documenting what has been learned so that it can be used as the baseline for planning and for on-going assessments.
