Literacy in SIL
Local Literature
SIL collaborates with local communities and other agencies to conduct writer's workshops, promote local literature production and develop a variety of literacy related materials in minority languages. The production of literature may be under less-than-sophisticated conditions, even using rudimentary silk screening or mimeographing to produce materials.
Funding of local literature production and establishing distribution mechanisms are among the obstacles in making minority language literature available to the people. Distribution and maintenance of literature is especially difficult among those populations that are widely scattered over rugged geographic terrain or in severe climates.
