epenthesis:
a process of inserting a sound,
especially when this facilitates pronunciation.
For example,
in Nahuatl
there is an epenthesis of the phoneme
i between two initial consonants.
(That is,
Ø
i / #C__C.)
Thus, since the base form
/"k-neki"/ (it-want) 'he/she wants it'
would be hard to pronounce,
the word is pronounced
/"kineki"/ instead.
[Spanish:
epéntesis]
