La Muerte de Cöimaxp

Cöimaxp era un hombre pequeñito
que vivía en la isla San Esteban. Él era un seri.
Cuando se sentaba detrás de un cántaro, sólo
se veía su sombrero.
Un día se fue con su grupo a la isla
San Lorenzo en busca de comida, y luego de un año decidieron
regresar a San Esteban. Hicieron siete balsas y emprendieron el
regreso. Cuando se acercaban a la pequeña isla, un gran
tiburón blanco los atacó y se comió a algunos.
Entre ellos estaba Cöimaxp.
Un hombre llamado Camisa Azul con los que
iban en su balsa pudo salvarse remando muy rápido. Ya en la
playa hicieron fuego y durante dos días esperaron a que el
tiburón se fuera; pero éste al oler el fuego, se
quedó allí.
En la mañana del segundo día
vino un animal marino enorme y extraño parecido a una iguana
gigante, mató al tiburón y luego se fue.
Entonces los que quedaron vivos fueron a
donde se encontraban los demás seris, cerca del Campo
Pajíi, y les dijeron a los demás que las balsas y la
gente habían desaparecido. Así murió
Cöimaxp, el seri pequeñito.
Aquí se acaba la historia de la muerte
de Cöimaxp.
The Death of Cöimaxp

Cöimaxp was a small Seri man who lived
on San Esteban Island. When he sat behind a water jug, one could
only see his hat.
One day he went with his group to San Lorenzo
Island to look for food, and after a year there they decided to
return to San Esteban Island. They made seven reed boats and
started their return trip. When they were close to the small
island, a large white shark attacked them and ate some of them. One
of those killed was Cöimaxp.
A man named Blue Shirt was able to paddle
quickly and save himself and those who were traveling with him.
Once they arrived to the beach, they made a fire and waited for two
days for the shark to leave, but the shark smelled the fire and
stayed close.
On the morning of the second day a large and
strange sea animal that resembled a giant iguana came and killed
the shark and then left.
Then those who were left alive went and found
the other Seris, who were near Camp Pajíi, and told them
that the other reed boats and people had disappeared. That's how
Cöimaxp, the little Seri man, died.
That's the end of the story of the death of
Cöimaxp.
