Abstract:
In Swahili the usual distinction between direct objects and indirect objects does not work very well, as in ditransitive constructions the language marks different constituents as direct objects than in simple transitive constructions. The paper investigates relevant data from Swahili and compares the previous approaches on how to deal with the described phenomena. Finally the paper proposes a semantic approach, stating that Swahili encodes secondary grammatical relations differently than other languages, based on a grammatical role called "Ziel" ('goal').
