Metonymy and Synecdoche in the New Testament

Date:
1999
Date Created:
1994
Extent:
127 pages
Description:
The purpose of this paper is to bring to the attention of translators the nature of metonymy and synecdoche and the need to translate these two figures meaningfully. The appendix consists of a fairly complete listing of metonymy and synecdoche found in the New Testament.
This material in its original form was published in Notes on Translation No. 23 (February, 1967). It now seems worthwhile to republish Beekman's article, together with a revised and expanded appendix.
