This text describes one of the most nostalgic events in Subanen life: the intricate ceremony of the elders calculating bride wealth for the groom to present to the bride's parents during the wedding. Each component of the bride wealth is a symbolic reference either to the parents' love and care for their daughter until this day, or to the compatible, peaceful, upright life the elders wish for the married couple. For a Subanen listener, the very recitation of these symbolic items recreates a picture of his own wedding or that of a cherished son or daughter, with the elders sitting bent over a winnowing tray in the light of small kerosene lamps, meticulously counting out the kernels of corn used in the ritual.
