Abstract:

This report is based on a year-long sociolinguistic survey of the Gondi-speaking communities of central India. The survey was conducted to assist Indian language planners in determining which dialects can most effectively be developed as standards from which written forms can be developed. The various Gondi dialects were analyzed through the use of lexical similarity study, dialect intelligibility testing, a language use and attitude study, and a pilot bilingualism study.
