SIL's dedication to language development past and present
A language survey along the Wildeman River was conducted to determine what languages are spoken in each village, as well as the internal dialectology and language vitality of each of the languages encountered. Data were gathered through the use of wordlists, sociolinguistic questionnaires as well as informal observation. Some data from a previous survey on the neighboring Mapi River were also combined with the data gathered during the present survey. The results of the combined data indicate the team encountered two separate yet related Yaqay languages, and five separate yet related Awyu languages. While it appears that there is potential for development of each of these languages, further research is needed to get a more complete picture of the situation of these languages.
